Digital marketing is all about keeping up with the latest trends.
But there are still some core aspects of marketing that remain just as important as they were when they were first introduced… such as blogging!
According to Notre Dame University of Maryland, the first blog was created back in 1994. Although content marketing has evolved since then – with the birth of YouTube, podcasts, short-form video, social media, and more – blogs are still a really important way to drive organic traffic to your website.
Here are five reasons why blogging should still be a core component of your content marketing plan.
Blogs Enhance Your SEO
One of the biggest ways that blogs can drive traffic to your website is through Search Engine Optimization (SEO.) When you use certain keywords in your writing, it will trigger Google and other search engine bots to associate your content with those keywords. When someone searches for that keyword, your site has a higher chance of being returned to the searcher!
The business benefits to this are obvious: More website traffic = more leads = more sales.
Blogging also helps when it comes to obtaining quality backlinks. When other sites have more content to link to, you’ll increase your chance of them linking back to your site. Google likes to see that other people and companies trust your content. This reassures them that your site is a good place to send its users.
Blogs Support Your Thought Leadership
It’s important to show your potential clients/customers that you know what you’re talking about, especially if you’re a service-based business. Blogs provide a space to showcase your knowledge, answer commonly asked questions, and build your industry authority.
Remember those backlinks we talked about? Those aren’t just good for SEO purposes. They also support your position as a thought leader. When other well-respected organizations link back to your content, it helps to establish your credibility and standing in your industry.
All of this leads back to business growth because your target audience wants to work with organizations they trust.
Blogs Serve as a News and Events Hub
Need somewhere to make a big announcement, keep track of your news, or announce an upcoming event? A blog is a great place to do that!
In addition to making your announcement, you can expand on it by including relevant information, graphics, and photographs. When you create a blog for every press release or event, that also gives you a handy landing page to link in your other content (see below!)
Blogs Make Great Social Media Content
Rather than spending time researching new topics for all of your platforms, repurpose your blogs! This is how I help many of my social media clients keep their platforms relevant.
Think of your blog as a multitasking team member. All of the content that you put into your blog can also be repurposed into written social media posts, carousels, long-from videos, podcast episodes, TikTok/Reels, and more.
You can also use your blog as a lead-in for social media posts. Write a sentence or two about your blog topic, add a link to your blog, and boom! You’ve created a quality social media post AND driven traffic to your website; it’s a win-win!
Blogs Enhance Your Email Marketing Content
Email marketing is a key aspect of any content marketing plan. Blogs can pull double duty here, too. Many of my clients (myself included) use our email newsletters as a way to get new content in front of my audience. And yes, this includes the latest blogs on our websites.
Everyone on your list probably doesn’t visit your website looking for new content often… but they do read your newsletter. Add value for your captive audience – and increase the chances of a sale – by directing them to your blog content.
