I’m writing this in December 2022, but 2023 is already on my mind! A new calendar year is the perfect time to reflect on your business and set fresh goals you want to accomplish in the months ahead.
When setting goals, you want to make sure you’re equipping yourself with the tools you need to successfully tackle them. That’s why a new year is the perfect nudge you need to revisit your business’s website, since a website is often your marketing hub.
Ask yourself: Does your current website support your new set of goals?
Some business owners haven’t updated their website in years, while others make updates and improvements every month. It’s important to remember that each business is completely unique and requires different frequencies of online updates.
How Often to Update Your Website
In my experience serving business owners and entrepreneurs, I believe there are four questions you should ask yourself when deciding whether it’s time to update the copy on your business website.
- Have your products or services changed?
- Have your primary products or services changed?
- Has your brand story changed?
- Is the user experience confusing?
I dug even deeper into these questions in my blog here! While a general guideline to follow is to update your website copy at least once a year, if at any point in time you answer “yes” to any of the four above questions, then the answer is “yes, it’s time for an update!”
Why You Should Regularly Update Your Website
While revamping your website copy may seem like a tedious task to add to your to-do list, the benefits are well worth the effort. Revisiting your website copy will keep your content new and fresh for both search engines and customers, optimize your SEO, and give you an opportunity to fix any broken extensions.
I strongly believe that it’s risky to rely on the shifting sands of social media as your only means of connecting with your audience. Your website, on the other hand, is your place to call home. You have complete control over the messaging, the mobile/desktop experience, and how people can interact with it. It’s your space to showcase why your business exists and how you serve your audience.
Writing the Perfect Website Home Page
There are five things you need to have on your website homepage. These principles are adapted from the Storybrand method, as outlined in Donald Miller’s excellent books “Building a Storybrand” and “Marketing Made Simple.” The five things your website homepage needs are:
- A catchy – but not cutesy – header
- A clear and actionable CTA
- A punchy one-liner
- A clearly identified audience problem
- A perfectly positioned solution
I dropped a ton of examples of each of these five concepts right here.
